The arrangement of your furniture can make a big difference in your dorm. Have a look at the arrangement once you arrive and play around with different layouts. Why not put two desks back-to-back or move a dresser into a closet? Create extra space and seating by turning your bed into a daybed/couch. When purchasing furniture, think about how functional those pieces can be other than their main purpose. Futons, storage ottomans, and shoe rack can be multifunctional, allowing extra space. Speaking of space, turning your bed into a “loft” adds a great deal of space and placing plastic containers vertically as shelves keeping items organized and within reach.
Dress up what you can. Paint on the walls and nails are a no, no at most school, but wall decals, artwork hung using adhesive, inspirational boards will add a personal and colorful touch. Even decorating a plain door with decals, fabric, or pictures will make a big difference. Hanging tapestries over dead space is a cheap idea. Going bold with color will make the room feel more welcoming with a touch of vibrancy.
